Well for one of us! Our summer student Katie Lovett is returning to Dalhousie’s Schulich School of Law for her final year but she’ll be back with us in June, 2015 as an articling clerk. A native of Cole Harbour, NS, Katie holds a B.A. (Hon’s) in Criminology and Criminal Justice with a concentration in Psychology from Carleton University. The value of Katie’s volunteer work with Elizabeth Fry and with the Pro Bono student’s association became clear over the past several months. We all enjoyed her unflagging enthusiasm and her delight in using her law school skills to help solve real-world problems.
How did the rest spend our summer? Two lawyers (Julia & Jenny) attended the National Family Law Program in Whistler, BC, joining over 400 family lawyers, Judges and related professionals in the biannual pilgrimage to the source of all things family law. And two of our associates (Amanda & Jenny) experienced the Canadian Bar Association’s annual meeting in St. John’s, NF, where the discussions ranged from the future of the legal profession to the best way to benefit from technology. For lawyers at least, summer school isn’t the consequence of slacking during the “school year” – it’s a chance to hone skills and increase knowledge in different locations within this beautiful country. But now we’re preparing for our annual “how can we do it better” discussion; when we come together as a group to think about what we offer as a firm and how we can enhance our value to our clients. We know a lot about law – but we’re seeking new and better ways to use the law and the legal process. So bring on the fall!
