A recent decision of the Supreme Court of Canada will have a profound effect on property division for former cohabitants.

Perhaps the most-misunderstood area of Family Law is the division of property for Nova Scotia common-law couples when their relationship ends. No matter how long couples cohabit, the law does NOT assume an equal division of their assets. However, the Supreme Court has clarified when and how one person can claim compensation for contributions to the relationship.
